The Strokes and their accents

Posted by jojowas on

Sorry, I don't mean to spam  but didn't know where to post this
When I first heard a interview of the boys, I was shocked because apart from Nick, they didn't that thick, distinctive accent I expect American people to have, don't know maybe it's because they are often bored and lazy, so it gives that wrong impression or maybe it's just the NY accent that is less distinctive than the "californian" accent I hear in films and stuff.
Or I'm right and it because julian and albert spent a part of their childhood in switzerland and Fab and Nikolai's parents are foreigners(I think)

Just wanted to know what you Yankees think : have I got a point or am I just a crazy motherfucker?

This is all so funny to read! For an American, I don't think I have a distinct accent (it's not southern or Boston or NY or anything). However, I almost instantly pick one up upon being around someone with an accent...completely unintentional. A friend of mine left after elementary school, spent three years in England, moved back for our high school years, and she refuses to speak in her British accent for me (likewise she declined any requests for her American accent while living there). I'm completely infatuated with accents. I've always wondered how I sound to someone else. I know ours is not the prettiest of languages, especially considering the ways we enunciate consonants or whatever. I suppose we sound harsh, as the German language comes off to me, whereas other languages such as Spanish have more natural flow to them (accompanied by accents).

I'm from New York and I feel like I have a very similar accent, It's mostly people from Brooklyn and Long Island that pronounce words like "DAWG" and "CAWFEE". They sound pretty American to me.

And I'm pretty sure Julian has slight speech impediment like he says "dis" instead of "this"...

Julian pronounces the word "varieties" in "the Modern age" and the phrase "boats in the dock" (Ize of the world) with a english accent

I have the, lets kill of all the Ts that go after Ns accent.
"I wanna go hike in the mou-ens!"
Well actually I've gotten a lot better.

i think i made up my own accent.
haha thats awesome. i totally forgot about the 'eh', for a second there.
shit man thats the best part...

naaaat
Excpet Americans.

haha no i get you really im from america, but my friends from germany were just in town and they were making fun of all the different american accents. but of course they speak with british accents when they speak english.

but if anything midwest americans probably have the least accent of anyone.

From a European point of view, you American have got the thickest and weirdest accent(s)
You mispronounce T's (pronounced D or not pronounced), you pronounce man "men" and so on

Excpet Americans.
8-)

everyone has accents

Americans don't have accents.
8-)

theyre all from america? therefore they have american accents/.

the canadian accent reminds me of sarah palin kinda lol. the way she talks.
the only one i was surprised to hear was albert and fab when i never heard them speak before

haha thats awesome. i totally forgot about the 'eh', for a second there.

usually when i hear americans talk, its no difference to me as any other canadian;
unless the americans are from the south and the canadians are either french or from newfoundland
you guys sound like you over pronounce your r's and it sounds like you say "lahst wintrrr i was abouooot to goo down to the forrt"
you sound like idiots to us.
but i get what you mean about the over pronouning our r's, i.e. my step mother.

aahaha "lahst wintrrr i was abouooot to goo down to the forrt"

and we do say "eh" alot but never do i say "tell me aboot it"
French canadians sound also like idiots to my ears

for example, in "in transit", when julian says "for it shall go, oh yeah it shall" I think he pronounces shall with an english accent(that is to say correctly, unlike Americans)
I don't hear a brit accent there.

what do canadians sound like to non-canadians?

I know what you're talking about. There are many different ways people can speak English. Common in the Northeast and Midwest America, is a "hard, thick" accent. I never really heard it until I started to learn Espanol.

I think Americans who have never spoken another language have a much "harder, thicker" pronounciation of their vowels, almost like they're trying to sound tough. Not to sound like a douchebag, but this is common with uneducated Americans. More educated Americans have "TV accents", in other words they talk without heavy dialects - like people on TV.

 My 2 cents....

no need to be aggressive or roll one's eyes
I'm not english-speaking, I didn't claim anything, just wanted to know some american points of view
Now I know I'm a crazy schmuck ;)
yankee?
Yankee , gringo = american

 there are thousands of different american dilects/accents
