I'm 24 years old and is this it changed how i felt about music. Everything good about rock n roll was embodied in a stripped down, raw and raunchy album chalked full of classics. Even better you would have to be deaf to not hear the immense potential that oozed from every track. Then came room on fire. God damn that album changed my life. Probably one the best opening tracks to a cd I've ever heard and track after track it never lets up. Then the hiatus came and left me on my knees salivating for the return of the hands down kings of rock. Juicebox floored me. It was like this heavier, more futuristic "take it or leave it" i couldn't stop putting on repeat. The album went in such an intense, in your face approach my overwhelming feeling of impatience for the album to finally drop right went out the window. Then comes an epic meltdown. Now don't get me wrong I understand the need for the general public to be left out of many personal issues but someone needs to explain to me what the fuck happened to five of the most talented musicians that were lucky enough to find one another. The synergistic effect that defined the strokes came to the most depressing and disappointing halt I've ever seen when all of a sudden Julian decided he'd rather act like his cock his twenty times bigger then the everyone else'. For those of you ready to hunt me down and tell how much of a "revolutionary" he is, I'm with you. There was major portion of the strokes history where even though everyone considered him to be the main focus he acted like a mature, equal portion of a band that seemed to be unstoppable. Unfortunately, Julian took to much head to his head (that's creative baby). Is there anything better in the world then someone who is gifted so far beyond belief and it only makes that person work twice as hard. I really don't want people reading this to get the wrong idea because this band is and forever will hold a special place in my heart as the first band I truly loved once I grew up I just write this to everyone else like me who has been left wondering where that gritty, edgy and jaw-dropping band went to or in other words.....what ever happened

gweiland, well said but.. Julian wrote the first two albums almost entirely by himself. Now, the band members want to participate but he made the strokes who you described them to be, the kings of rock or should have been. It seems that Julian is a control freak, like many talented people are about their work, and it has been difficult for him to step back.

I've listened to plenty of rock n roll artists from the 60's thru now and only a handful of bands have given us what the strokes have in their first three albums, greatness, track after track. Angles is a deviation from that standard. The songs do not sound very good live because they have experimented too much especially with the vocals - except for Under Cover which is one of their greatest tunes.

The band should come to terms that Jule's is a special talent and allow him to take the lead in most if not all of the songwriting. If they do not then the least they can do is bring back the old raw vocals from the previous 3 albums instead of the 80's pop vocals he used in Angles.

dont blame the band ,
take it or leave it Wink
