I LOVE THE WAY HE DANCES!!!!!! as ive said b4 i love sexy and doofy or was it selfconscious and unsure?... btw, i did hear it. ding dong! i said it had first impressions and a bit of room on fire or it may b that those are kinda my favorites to space out to.

Anyway, as far as the other bullshit... did you ever see trading places with richard pryor and steve martin (who btw is DOING MUSICAL BLUEGRASS COOL STUFF!!) dios me perdone- don't let that happen!

Yeah.. I should really be sucking offf ALbert.. the renaissance man.. lol

Remember that clip from In Transit where Albert is filming Julian and Nick and Julian says "getting really creative, Albert"... that clip summed up Albert's entire existence.. and how lame him going solo was.. and how it's ruined the band... too bad the cult members don't get it. They continue to contribute to it.. like good little cult members...

Einstein also was out getting laid all the time, and was a notorious ladies man. I'm currently getting sucked off as I type this. You're on a message board sucking off another man. Are you sure you're in Einstein's league?

Geniuses are usually very sloppy.. they have more important things to do than worry about the little things. That's for the little people.. that's why Einstein wore the same thing every day..

He's more likely to be a lowly PR guy just doing what he's told, because I've never seen a supposed genius have such an appalling lack of spelling and grammar skills, or have so much time to rake up 1200 posts with a busy performance schedule.

I'm actually Julian and I could tell you everything but what fun would there be in that? I love a good mystery. Creates excitement.

Bam! I think you solved it!

Technical problem with the other mic...had to do a last minute switch over but still needed to keep the vocal effects.

We know that Julian's vocal is always heavily compressed, so their mixer dude had to make the compression settings on the fly which affected the apparent power of his voice (why it was varying in apparent volume and solidity).

Then again, according to that dipshit, YOU are jules - so why don't you just tell me?

Keep in mind though that Jules is going to do the shows and also he has a music video coming out.. all this stuff could be tied into that.. including the giant keyboard stations.. so think of the micstand like a prop..

but it is possible you are right.. if he was going to use a weird mic for dramatic effect it could have had some technical problems and you only have one of them... hard to say.. when they didn't have the original mic they may have had to improvise and it was difficult to do on the fly..

Well the only effect it had on me was making me want a white mic stand!
oh yeah, and the conspiracy theories.

I think it just sounded rough because they were trying to differentiate the 2 vocal styles in the song.. maybe Jules wanted it to be distinct but they couldn't get it right or something.. I don't think he wanted to use the mic stand because he didn't use it in Japan either I don't think.. maybe just there for effect..

Any thoughts on that awesome white vocal mic stand that's just sitting there behind julian?

Because he honestly did look pretty awkward up there, and his voice was VERY shaky at the start - it's not like he ain't been on national TV before, so I really can't believe he was just nervous.

One of my theories is that it was a last minute decision to ditch the mic stand and dance around so he'd be the focus of the group and, in doing so, actually look like a solo artist rather than just a band member standing behind a mic stand.

My other theory is that the mic clip on his stand broke at the very last second and the crew at the side of the stage just shrugged their shoulders so Jules said, fuck it, let's dance this bitch out.

Wicked! Nice to see it full screen :]

(2.20). Oh, and 2.26 he does a sort of costume-drama, swooning-matron, back-of-hand-to-the-face thing. - Hallarious! NME really take the piss sometimes.
Julian's dancing is the best! The drummer had something going on too, haha

that one's good too.

awesome! thanks for the link. it's funny how NME are hacking on him!

Here's a link where you could watch it in HQ :)

I really want to see it as you guys saw it on TV, these videos on Youtube suck... From what I could hear, I liked this live version way better than the song that I already liked very much! After so many years he still gives me the chills everytime he's near a microphone

I know I'm not the most objective person as I knew I'd like whatever music it is as long as his voice is on it, but I don't understand why all the negative comments!
You say he looked akward or nervous, but it's just him being him sober , cause when he performed under the influence it's like when you go dancing and you take a drink or two to get enough courage to go talk to a girl or a boy...

Some may say he acted silly or danced in a robotic kind of way or whatever but, haven't you watched You only live once video? or many many more live performances? It's the way he dances or the way he moves while performing; and I think it's so freaking cute... Irresistible!
It's just him being him, he's not that baddass camera-breaker rock drunk rockstar you thought he was... There's a lot more to him...

Julian didn't look that nervous. And, to go to another generation, I saw a TV interview with Tony Bennett recently and he said, "Early in my career I was really nervous about a gig. And I went to Frank Sinatra for advice. And Sinatra told me, `Audiences don't mind if you're nervous. Just make sure you pick good songs.'"

Plus if we were to compare this performance with Nikolais few performances of his solo stuff, it would be almost similar! Nikolai,.... i remember him standing up there all nervous singing his songs and what not. So from stroke to stroke, its completely normal to seem shy at first. :D

I wonder if Julian made the drummer wear that Jacket.. because I swear I saw Julian wearing that jacket on a video I saw on here from Youtube where Jules is at a Mets game in the stands...

If your having trouble viewing the youtube link as many of you have said, you can go to nbc's website and watch the show or just Julian's performance in high def. http://www.tonightshowwithconanobrien.com/video/episodes/#vid=1170268/?__source=recent-eps-module

Also, what I didn't get about his drummer was that he was wearing a mets jacket and a dodgers hat, how does that work exactly, you can't root for two baseball team wearing a single oufit..... Julian needs to get his shit (act) together

But your not julian. and why a hint? your stupid.

Anyways. Yesterday i managed to get the analog shit going and was able to watch it! Hooray! One thing, As soon as Julian started singing the first line "I just nod", i felt the nerveousness in him. It sounded like a brand new singer trying really hard not to mess up, like the voice was fading and shit. I cant exactly describe it but hopefully you know what i mean. After the first couple lines, he got his act together and began singing more liike what the record sounds like. It was nice seeing him do some goofy dancing on stage like old times but for some reason it looked wrong this time. I dunno like... It was strange. Someone said if this was their first introduction to julian, they would think of him as a douchebag. And in many ways thats true. :( But either way we as strokes fans can agree he is just getting the hang of it because its something new. Plus we can understand why he was nervous, it was national, and it was basically his first presentation to the world of his solo project, not just the music, but as a whole performing artist.

You guys again, wonder too much about the superficial initiatives.
(Hint: If I were Julian, I'd dislike you)
I think we probably liked it more than the average viewer...
I posted something about it on my Facebook, for people to watch or whatever, and I got a whole lot of negative comments back. And I can see why...
If that was my first introduction to Julian I would probably think he was a douche bag. At least based on the fact that his drummer was wearing a ny jacket, and a sideways la hat with a mullet to boot, and Julian was decked out in tight leather with yellow streaks in his hair...and his dancing (which I usually love) was awkward and weird. People commented on that more than anything. Then with the trickery with his mic and vocals,I don't know...it's like he came off as some weird techno/wanna be hipster/rapper or something who was trying to hard (mainly with the dancing). And I know that ain't him. More than the music, I think he needs to figure out how he wants to come off, like his image or whatever. That's one thing the strokes as a band put together very well. You never watched them and were'nt sure what you were looking at...if that made sense. I think he needs to give his drummer some fucking fashion advice, bring the mic stand back, and turn everything UP--then we'll be good to go.
Yeah! That's exactly what I was thinking. My dad was watching it next to me and I was like oh god please go away you're going to think I have awful music taste. I just wanted to be like, I swear he's really a genius and performs amazing live! But as a first impression (ha) it wasn't too impressive. I thought about posting it on Facebook, but yeah, I probably would have received tons of negative responses too.

MIC STAND AND VOLUME! Word. haha

Yeah, I didn't much like it. Empty, as others have said. But it's gotta be a really tough song to pull of live anyway, there are so many parts to it and the timing and the loudness has to be just right to complement each part. I would have loved to hear 4 Chords or Glass, to really hear Jules' voice. But I'm confident that it will only get better as he practices live. He'll master it quickly. I do agree that he seems very awkward though...because he's without his fellow strokes? Or because he really should always have a mic stand? hah

hmmm maty, i think we can say that about every artist from time to time.
i think it was a pretty creative band, music and persona. not too far from the strokes and yet original, fucking ballsy attempt! now, what do you think?!

I thought the performance just prooved what a weak song "11th dimension" is. A basic , predictable, uncreative song with no balls streched out to 4 min. You can sort of hide behind thses sort of things on record but live on tv your gonna get found out.

julian you were just like the music!! its soo consistent, youre sooo cute baby. its not tooo far off from you being julian... i still hear traces of first impressions and room on fire... hugs! b more comfortable you did great! best of luck!!! wen i see you youre gonna need a colostemy bag if you let me get near you- from the big hug i wanna give you again!!!!!!!

I think the music discounts all the stuff you were saying though, CC. A person like you describe wouldn't be able to make music like Julian makes. not write the lyrics he does. If people aren't smart enough to see that then that is their own problem really. There are alway going to be idiots that don't get it. a ton of people didn't get the Strokes either.. if you don's fit perfectly ina category idiots are going to put you in there anyway or hate you because you are different.

Overall it was a good performance.it wasn't the greatest! but he still has his cute little dance moves! haha.thats always fun to watch.i give him props for that.his vocals weren't too bad either..and he was probally just really nervous!but now I really see how good and amazing the 4 other strokes sound live behind julian.

I think the normal viewer was thinking, "Why did the singer add such a fuzzy, robotic effect to his vocal? Why is his vocal volume as faint as a back-up singer's?"

I actually watched it "live" on TV, when I knew millions others were watching, and I thought, "Lots of head scratching is going on right now."

I was mostly amused because Julian didn't have a microphone stand to swing angrily around like he's done at countless Strokes shows, and instead acted rather sweet and accomodating. He dropped his angry attitude altogether, and carried himself like a nice little boy about to hand his teacher a shiny apple.

I enjoyed it, but it was definitely flawed. (But then I'm not crazy about the album, either.)

I think we probably liked it more than the average viewer...
music was great, but julian's vocals were rather weaker than anyone would have liked; i was upset that they didn't turn the mic up any louder. on a side note, i'm always charmed when he does the little bowing thing with his hands after performances... [me being asian, i guess.]

on another side note, the male drummer in the back was entertaining to watch. and... i thought it was an overall good "episode" of conan, even though i haaaate paula deen. food network backstage unwrapped has ruined her in my eyes.
I thought the vocals seemed muted and small too but maybe we are just over analyzing it. The normal viewer probably doesn't notice so much.. and the normal viewer that isn't familiar with Jules is probably charmed by other aspects of his talents we take for granted now.. hopefully.

it was definitely weird!
empty performance! julian was trying too hard!
in one point i was staring at the girl behind him!
but the music wasn't that bad!
what??? the smell of you jerking off to julian
I doubt anyone will be jerking to Albert ever again.. hehehe

that one's a bit better...but only slightly :?
got lots of skips and shit so, if you're desperate i guess it'll do.

Thanks for posting the video, but it ain't really watchable.
I'll have to keep a look out for a HDTV rip!
although i don't particularly wanna sit through conan's whole show...

what??? the smell of you jerking off to julian

There's that smmeeelll again...hhhmmmmm

Yeah I just watched it on the tv and I was not impressed at all, it sounded very hollow (or empty as someone said) and Julian just seemed too unenthused or maybe nervous, i dunno, it just felt awkward, and kinda uncomfortable to watch

I thought it sounded rough at first but then when they got going it was better than the CD version by a massive degree, IMO (and I love the CD version). I think they are just still working the bugs out.

I'm a big Julian fan, but that wasn't a good performance...the music sounded very very empty compared to the album version and Jules' vocals weren't up to his standard...He definitely benefits from having Albert and Nick's guitars behind him...

yeah! He was amazing. The song was amazing. His Japan show looked so different.. it's weird. Like 2 different people.

True... Hey did u see julian on Conan? :?

I'm sorry.. but the man is a musical God. That's all ther eis too it.. funny thing is so few people realize it..
