Stillbirth

I keep giving The 4th Album a shot and it keeps failing to appeal to me. It still feels malformed, flat and basically dead. I think part of it comes from the fact that the much-lauded ´cooperation` that finally found its way into the Strokes` working process turned out to be more of a cobbling together, lacking quite a bit of the homogeneity Mr. Casablancas’ autocracy provided. But an even bigger part, and I can only keep repeating myself here, still comes from Mr. Casablancas’ exceptionally uninspired, lifeless singing. This strikes the eye – or rather the ear – all the more as hitherto his chief vocal feature was not necessarily accuracy but intensity. What I really found cool about him was that half of the time he sounded like his life depended on every fucking note he hit (more or less). Like he was screaming his soul to the heavens. With The 4th Album you wonder if there even is some soul left…
